Dr Hansen designed and runs the BIO-Innovation Ecosystem in the College of Life Sciences at Brigham Young University. This includes a two-semester series of courses (PDBIO444 and PDIO445) that prepare students in the life sciences to start and build biology-based technology companies. Advanced students can work as part of lab team-based consulting from that handles consulting projects for actual biology-based tech companies. Former BIO-Innovation students have gone out to start and lead companies, develop novel biotechnologies, and take positions at consulting firms such as Bain and LEK. Dr Hansen is active in advising and forming biopharma companies, having founded Frost Biologic in 2007.
